My mother-in-law’s walking choice for the week was around a town called Murnau. It is embarrassing to admit but we got a mild sunburn while doing a hike there. We knew the weather would be good but we did not know that the walk would have barely any shade. Additionally, we did not know we were going to make a 15 km (about 9.3 miles) hike that day. It’s breath-taking at Mittenwald, Bavaria
My mother-in law was surprised when she learned that I had never been to Mittenwald. It is a 90-minute drive (in good traffic) south of Munich but on weekends, this could stretch well over 2 hours. Mittenwald is a beautiful area close to the Alps and a popular escape destination for city dwellers to immerse in nature. It was also our pick for our weekly walking tour. A stroll around Thanning, Bavaria
I have “disappeared” from blogging for a while but it is not because I have not been travelling. My last few trips have all been for work. Travelling for work and being kept indoors is far from being an adventure to blog about. I hope to write about some of these places but perhaps during another visit. Lately my adventures have stayed local and with spring upon us, walks once a week have been vital to the soul. This week’s selection was a tiny village south of Munich called Thanning. The Glacial Lagoon, Iceland
The Glacial Lagoon is one of our most loved locations we visited. In Icelandic, it is called Jökulsárlón. Unlike anything else, the lagoon is constantly changing so every ice sculpture drifts on the water surface for a time and then takes its leave to be replaced by another eye-catching ice form. The ice that fills the lagoon are broken parts of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, a process called “calving”. Continue reading “The Glacial Lagoon, Iceland”
A visit to Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Iceland
We made Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon our first stop of the day. Unfortunately for us, it was a grey sky that morning. Getting there was a bit tricky. We found that road signs were lacking and had almost missed the turn into route 206. From route 1 (the main road around Iceland), the path to the canyon was a dirt road so the 4W drive we had was definitely necessary. While our stop at Fjaðrárgljúfur was a brief one, the canyon was worth the stop. It was beautiful! Continue reading “A visit to Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, Iceland”
Diving in Iceland
This was insane! Memorable but out of this world on so many levels. To the divers who are used to reef diving, diving in Iceland cannot be compared to anything you’ve experienced.
Camping in Iceland
The accommodation for our trip was mixed between camping and Airbnb, so some nights were spent in a tent and on some nights, we slept in a bed. Even in camping, we have experienced both ‘wild’ camping, as in we looked around and picked a spot to pitch our tent, and camping on designated camp ground. So having tried the different affordable accommodation possibilities, here’s my opinion about camping in Iceland. Continue reading “Camping in Iceland”
Sólheimajökull Glacier, Iceland
The first glacier we visited was the Sólheimajökull glacier. From afar, it didn’t look like much with all the dirt covering it; it was well camouflaged with its surroundings. But the blue ice was certainly more evident as we got closer it….not to mention its size! Of course, at the time, we hadn’t seen the other glaciers yet so being the first glacier my eyes had ever set upon, this was magnificent! Continue reading “Sólheimajökull Glacier, Iceland”
Off the coast of Hiroshima, the island Miyajima, Japan
On our day trip from Okayama to Hiroshima, we took the Shinkansen into the city. Without stopping to visit Hiroshima city itself, we headed straight for the local train service that would get us to the harbour. We were intent on taking a ferry across the water to a small island in the Hiroshima Prefecture. The shrine on the island is listed as a National Treasure in Japan as well as a UNESCO World Heritage site. If that’s not enough of a reason to visit, the free-roaming deer on the island would easily tip the balance. 🙂 Recommended by friends, we took the chance to visit Itsukushima (厳島) also known as Miyajima (宮島) within the limited time we had in the region. A city not to be missed: Okayama, Japan
If I had to pick a favourite city in Japan, my choice would be Okayama. A considerably small city compared to the giants like Tokyo and Kyoto, and yet somehow big enough to wander around and get lost. It’s location is by far the best we’ve had in Japan… Continue reading “A city not to be missed: Okayama, Japan”
